What is Dry Eye

The normal function of tears is to keep the surface of the eyes wet and lubricated. When tears don’t function as they should, dry eye occurs.

In Dry Eye Syndrome:

  • The eyes may not be making enough tears
  • The tears produced are of poor quality
  • The tears evaporate faster than they should

What are the Symptoms

  • Dryness
  • Burning, stinging or itchiness
  • Gritty feeling/foreign body sensations
  • Blurred vision
  • “Tired” eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Excessive watering
  • Photophobia (i.e. sensitivity to light)
  • Contact lens discomfort
  • Irritation from wind/smoke

What are the Causes

Dry Eye can be caused by a variety of everyday factors, including:

  • Aging
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
  • Dry environment/pollution
  • Computer use
  • Hormonal changes (e.g. especially in women experiencing menopause)
  • LASIK surgery
  • Preservatives
  • Alcohol
  • Certain types of medications* (e.g. anti-acne, some beta blockers, oral contraceptives, antihistamines, diuretics, decongestants and antidepressants)
  • Dry Eye may also be symptomatic of general health problems or disease (e.g. people with arthritis are more prone to Dry Eye)

*Please note: do not alter your prescribed medicines without discussing with your doctor. Your eye care professional or doctor can advise of any known links between medicines and Dry Eye.

How is Dry Eye Treated

Dry Eye Syndrome is caused by an imbalance of tears on the eye’s surface. Tears must be distributed efficiently, replaced or conserved in order to provide relief. When the eye surface dries out, the eye surface becomes rough like sand paper and feels gritty…it may even start to water as a response to the damage and these symptoms will usually last for hours or even days.

For the majority of people the most logical way to improve dry eyes is to artificially replace the tears and by doing so improve both quantity and quality. If you wait until your eyes hurt to put in tears, the surface damage is already there and you are too late. For tears to work, they must be put in regularly to keep the surface from drying out and getting damaged in the first place.

Dry Eye symptoms can also be improved by altering your environment. For example, avoiding dry environments (such as air conditioning), protecting the eye from blowing air (ie wearing sunglasses outside or when driving), drinking lots of water to stay well hydrated, etc. Also you may need to use your artificial tears more frequently if you are doing computer work, reading or watching television as most people tend to blink less often during these tasks.

There are a variety of artificial tears available and some will work better for your dry eyes than others. Your eye care professional can help you to find the best fit for your eyes and they can also discuss with you how to use your chosen treatment.
